switzerland

My first two stints out of the country were flawless as far as packing my luggage went. This time, however, I left three key components. Money, belt, ties, I remembered the money while I was still in the parking lot of my place, but I didn’t remember the ties or belt until I was half way to Tucson. My boss would later apologize for taking me to the only country where they don’t sell belts. Getting back to the travel, my flight plan was pretty shitty. Tucson, DFW, JFK, Zurich. Going home, Zurich, London, DFW, and Tucson. But like you all know, everything seems to come up Jacob. I slept the entire flight from Tucson to DFW because we left at 550 am, which meant I got up at 330 am. On the flight from DFW to JFK we were on a 2 X 3 and I was in the two section and no one was next to me. I was thinking it was going to be pretty sweet to have the extra leg room for the 3 hour flight. Well at the last second some big tall women gets on the plane. I saw her out of my periph bent over, and thought to myself, I am really attracted to panty-hose. Then I saw her face and was sad because she was old. Well she was putting her stuff in the overhead compartment up by row 7 and was in 11. Then she started to walk towards the back and I was thinking, shit shit shit. She stops at row 12 and then moves back up to 11 and says to me I’m sitting next to you, grumble grumble grumble. I casually look at her boarding pass and it says 12a, damn woman sit where you are assigned. Well it turns out she is a flight attendant and she gets hooked up during the flight. I get half of her lunch and she lends me the departed to watch. That was nice of her. We eventually start talking and she says she’s from Sao Paulo and her name is Dulce. And it true charming fashion, I say Sweet. She says hables espanol, I say nein. She says sprechen sie deutsch, I say no and we continue our conversation in English. Well it turns out she is the flight attendant for my flight between JFK and Zurich, but she’s working business class not cattle class. Well during the flight a couple of the flight attendants come by with the drink cart and offer me alcohol courtesy of Dulce. Sweet I say again, but they didn’t find it amusing. Then they come back with more and again say courtesy of Dulce. One of them gets curious and asks how long she and I have been friends, I say since Dallas. And he’s taken a back. Then another one comes up and asks how long she and I go back, I say about 4,000 miles west of here. “Well who’s the smooth talker?”, “I guess both of us” As I’m waking up Dulce comes and give me a package and wishes me a safe trip. In the bag is a bottle of pinot noir and a bottle of champagne and a first class amenity kit. Way to go me! My seat partner asks to see what’s in the bag and I show him and he says wow, that’s nice. Yeah, as I’m de-boarding the plane the flight attendants from my class give me goodbye snooty comments. Well maybe they should take a lesson from Dulce. I say goodbye to my seat partner who turns out to be from Turkey and he’s a wanted felon because he refused to serve in the army and emigrated here. Hmm, the things you’ll learn if you ask. As a platinum member of American I get to use the lounge for overseas flights. JFK lounge is pretty nice. Couple free drinks, quiet clean lounge. We landed in Zurich at 7am Saturday morning and had to wait about an hour for our transportation to pick us up. We had a two hour trip to Interlaken, which equals sleepy bye bye time for Jacob. Sadly, I slept through the only time I would have been able to take pictures of the lakes that make up the laken part of Interlaken. Oh well, I was sleepy. When we arrived at hotel, the Hotel du Nord, conveniently located next to a XXX shop, we weren’t allowed to check in until 2 pm. So what did my stupid American teammates want to do? Go to Hooters. I don’t even like going to Hooters in the states, why would I got there overseas. Well our waitress was of average good looks and there is where I had sticker shock and got a glimpse of how expensive eating out would be. Beer and chicken fingers were 20. 10 chicken wings were 25. About 2 we were allowed to check in and I immediately jumped in the shower to try and stay awake. It’s key to stay up as late as possible, that way you can shock your system in sleeping in the new time zone. Which is 8 hours ahead of my current one. Got up Sunday morning to a lovely European breakfast. Which is just cold cuts and hard boiled eggs. Europeans are thinner because then eat no refined white flour. Just pure protein, breakfast lunch and dinner, there’s always meat. Hardly ever any vegetables or fruit. Sunday was kind of a lax day, just set up the network; unfortunately I couldn’t get skiing into the schedule. Sunday night we went to a pizzeria where I had a 28 dollar pizza and I was still hungry. Monday was the pre-conference and it went fairly smooth. Monday night we went to some German restaurant. There is a dish called Rosti, which translates to the best mother fucking hash browns you will ever eat. If you are ever looking upon a menu that you have no idea how to translate and you see Rosti, trust in me that that dish will be tasty. I didn’t learn this until I got my plate of food which translated in to grilled turkey with cauliflower and brussel sprouts. I really need to buy Rosetta stone. Tuesday was the start of the conference and is always by far my favorite day because they do roll call of nations. I think there were 39 countries this time. It’s just really interesting to see the contingencies from these countries, their uniforms and ranks. Some only have 1 or 2 delegates. Some have 4 or 5, others 7 or 8. The mighty US and A has about 47. Well we host the thing and we are the primary financial backers of this, so we might at as well send any and everybody. Tuesday night was the ice-breaker, free food and liquor. This was being held in the Kasino Kursall, which is a very old casino in Interlaken, beautifully gilded chandeliers and banisters and molding. The Swiss army band played for us, the highlight of the night was them playing eye of the tiger and the entire Dutch delegation singing along. I was fairly inebriated and thusly slept like a charm. Tuesday afternoon our network went to hell in a hand basket and it went quickly. We tried everything from checking cables, ports, switches, interfaces, web servers, database servers, access points, ad hoc networks, P2P networks and just couldn’t find the culprit. There is a saying we have in IT, PFM, what fixed the issue? Answer, PFM. Pure Fucking Magic. It’s kind of my mantra and once you have exhausted yourself, usually PFM will rear its ugly head and you can say it’s working again because of that. And everyone goes on loving the Jacob; see everything always comes up Jacob. Wednesday, however, PFM took a leave of absence and we had problems throughout the day and everyone was getting pissed off. I had the fine duty of telling majors and lieutenant colonels they could not work and that they would just have to be patient and wait. Something I’m sure they don’t hear very often. We cut the wireless and ran cables and it seemed to work out okay. One of the problems with attending a giant communications planning conference is everyone is technically inclined and of course has their own opinion and they want to work on the problem too. So I had to puff out my USA chest and say listen Finland, Germany, Uzbekistan, Fuck off, you’re not helping. Whatever, were all friends afterwards in the bar, but its hard 10 hours with everyone scowling at you and generally pissed off in my general direction. Thursday was a short day because we had our cultural tour in the afternoon. We took an hour bus ride to the Gruyere Chateau and to the Gruyere cheese factory. The chateau was nice, cobble stones and small shops and inns. Very Swiss miss if you ask me. The cheese at the cheese factory was really good, very stinky, but it makes your tummy happy. The tour was guided by audio controllers and it was late in the day so when the guide was talking about people stirring the curds and whey, everyone had gone home for the day and there wasn’t anything to look at in the kitchen. Kind of a weak cultural tour but better than being in the office. Friday was kind of a high tension day between my boss and I, we had to break down the network and save all of our work earlier than we are accustom too. So voices were raised in both directions. We got everything packed up and into its travel case just in time for the out briefing. Our cultural dinner was held at the top of a mountain. This meant we were driven up to a ski resort and I got to see what I was missing. We had a 30 minute gondola ride up to the top and had an outstanding dinner, vegetable soup with pancake strips, tomato and mozzarella salad, veal and Rosti, and some kind of ice cream puff chocolate liquor dessert. Too make matter worse we had an open bar. Oh yeah, wine rum and beer all went into me and I had seconds on all. Had a lovely night with my friends. My closest friends are two Germans, two Finnish guys, one Slovenian, and one Canadian. A motley crew, but we enjoy each other immensely. Friday morning I forgot to set my alarm and everyone was giving me a hard time for showing up 45 minutes late. Friday night I woke up everyone hour to make sure I didn’t miss my bus which was leaving at 7 am. Didn’t get much sleep on the bus or on the flight from Zurich to Gatwick. The flight attendant was the most polite inconvenient person I ever had to deal with. I didn’t like any of his requests, but with a British accent you really want to oblige. Sir please don’t slouch, put your feet down, buckle your seat belt, bring your seat upright, store your tray table, put your bags back up into overhead compartment. Jeez, it didn’t bother me at all. Gatwick was pretty busy, but we had access to the British Airways lounge, which in Europe means all the alcohol I can digest and food. Two beers, two bags of chips and 8 quarter sandwiches I got on my flight to America. I had an entire row to myself, but just couldn’t sleep. Of course the people sitting at the windows were sleeping with the shades open. Luckily I had my trusty sleep mask. American just recently unveiled their new 777 entertainment system. All movies are on demand. So I got to see Rush Hour 3, no need for that movie to exist, Transformers, awesome, and documentary on the Apollo missions. I fell asleep during, does anyone know the outcome? 6 hours into the flight I was getting a little stir crazy, usually the 10 hour flight doesn’t bother me, but it was taking forever. When we finally landed in DFW I got stuck in the longest line for customs and immigration. During luggage declaration I was a tad bit nervous about the dogs sniffing luggage because I brought back a big stinking stinking wedge of cheese. It was vacuumed sealed but dogs are super strong like that. I guess this was just a drug dog because he didn’t bother me. On the way home to Tucson I was upgraded to first. Nothing like warm salted nuts in my mouth. It’s an appetizer, and then they gave me bbq brisket for my entrée. How did they know that was my favorite dish? Then warm chocolate chip cookies for dessert. And the BBW next woman didn’t want to eat hers, probably because she saw my two pack and felt inferior. So I ended up getting seconds. Hoo wahh Arrived in Tucson 25 hours later after I first got up, showered and went to bed. And that was my trip; it was really enjoyable, I’m leaving small stuff out like always but if you have any questions, feel free. Hash already berated me for not laying down with a 6’ blonde and eating chocolates afterwards, sorry I’m a letdown.

Cheers,

Jacob

a christmas story

a christmas story

I was very blessed the last two years for Christmas and New Years to fall on a Sunday and a Monday. This is because I could ask for four days off and in return get 10 total days off. This year both were on a Tuesday so I asked for 4 days off and got only 9. I left work on Friday the 21st and made it home in time for dinner. This was the first time I made it home since little egg had party hardy with rich and famous African Americans in Miami. So my whole entire family was talking about it when I arrived at the table. And just like the game telephone, with each person's retelling of the story it's bigger and more lavish each time. By the time I sat down Sammy was dating Shaq, she was 5'10", big breasts, and an Abercrombie model. None which are true, so I reset the story, but once you hear the fun Hollywood version you really don't want to go back to Green Acres. Friday night was rock band at Ians and drinking at Paul Paul house, he was annihilated, but he's the world's greatest maître when he is drunk, took my order and gave me a paper napkin when I was seated. Saturday I went to play some racquetball and got my ass handed to me by a world champion. After we were finished playing he asked me how old I was and I said 24 and he said he had been playing that long. So I didn't feel so bad. He then told me not to feel bad because he was the former champion. I said of what, Mexico? He said no, the world. Turns out he won the 18 and under world championship years ago. So then I was honored to have been whooped by a world champion. Saturday afternoon we went to Cousin Daniels grandmother's birthday party and I fell asleep. My mother was embarrassed, but he's my uncle and I can fall asleep on his couch if I feel like it. Then I went to my other uncle's house and saw my cousin godson who I hadn't seen since his birth. He loves to dance and to climb. He's pretty awesome. Saturday night we went to mavericks and saw everyone, had a good time, and everyone called bullshit on little eggs story. Sunday was church and nothing else and I don't think anyone was doing anything that night. Or I can't remember, it was almost two months ago. Monday was more racquetball in the morning and then lunch with Melissa; we went and scored some taco cabana. Most pleasant conversation, I was able to talk her ear off for 1 hour straight without being interrupted or without becoming hoarse afterwards. I just told her story after story, and she enjoyed herself, maybe she feigned enjoyment, but I'll take company anyway I can get it. Monday night was Christmas Eve so we had to go to church 4 hours early so we could get a seat. It was okay nothing to memorable. Christmas Eve my family got pretty inebriated, (God bless us, everyone), myself included. Everyone had their turn being burned; I unveiled a new dance, which was quickly shot down. Tony and I compared our wallets, (DoD contractors), to our military cousins, (Navy, Marines), ours were incredibly thick compared to theirs. Christmas didn't start until 11 am, thankfully, opened up presents. Everything I got I needed or wanted. Towels, clock, alarm clock, gloves, shirt, sweater, money, and gift cards. Thank you Santa. Christmas day the entire family met at a church hall for some lunch dinner, I tried to do my best but I was a little too hung over so I only ate two plates. Christmas night we went to Paul Paul's house for a little battle of the sex's trivial pursuit. I answered my two questions and felt proud. I was also the team mascot.

We lost because they got a bunch of easy questions. Two of their pie questions were on harry potter, give me a break. The next day the 26th Ian and I and Colin and Phil went to Taos for 5 days to go skiing. Taos was already 90% open with a 150cm base. Skiing conditions were excellent and very cold. All three days were at 0 or below. At the top of the mountain it was -10 and a water bottle in my jacket froze through. The last two days we rocked the Valkyrie run which is a tree run, very exciting. Nasty spills into 5 6 feet deep snow piles. Then we rocked the Hunziker bowl, which is mostly moguls but very challenging. Every day for lunch we had giant turkey sandwiches and little Debbie's oatmeal cream pies. At night we rocked out with our cocks out playing rock band. As it turns out I'm phenomenal. Just so you know. Coming home it was a giant fart session, who can out do whom. I didn't participate because I don't produce gas, but I had to suffer through it anyway. When I got home my parents had ditched me for Cloudcroft and I was only left with drew who as you all know is always happy to see me. So the night of the 30th was a Sunday and no one wanted to hang out. So I stayed home and watched family stone, which I've made a tradition since its inception. The next day was New Years Eve and I had no plans or at least everyone was undecided. So I went and spent some gift cards and returned a gift from Catherine. She thought I was fat and bought me a belt that was too big. Little does she know I have a massive two-pack, and then I went to see my dad's aunt and uncle and chat and drink with them. After that I came home and got ready for dinner, grandma took me to dinner and she slammed down a few scotch and sodas. Shes awesome like that, 4'10", maybe 95 pounds, probably can out drink me. For New Years Eve, I invited myself to hang out with Catherine, Annette, Nina cocina or Nina vagina (however you want to pronounce her name), and one of the Carrillo twins, not sure which. We went to the shadow bar, which was okay, I didn't really care for the techno music but then had Johnny black, so I was happy camper. Continued to drink and was thoroughly inebriated by the time we left. We dropped Catherine off and then went back out to TC. I've never waited so long to for food at TC in all my life, no matter time of day. Juse showed up and I talked with him for awhile. Chugged a few glasses of water and went to bed. Woke up at 1130, completely not-hung-over, made a massive dish of huevos con Peyton's chorizo. Peyton's chorizo is absolutely the greatest concoction of animal parts and spices ever assembled. Watched just friend, which is also a tradition I started. Packed my stuff waited for my mom to kiss me goodbye and was off. Made it home safely.

snowbird

snowbird

The week after Thanksgiving I only had a short week because Ian and I and the fam were going up to Mormonland for some skiing. Whoever thought up the idea of strapping sticks to your feet so you could go down a mountain faster than you can fall is a genius. We were going to Snowbird to the Cliff lodge which is a ski in and ski out resort. Sadly since it was so early in the season there wasn't much snow. The mountain was only 2% open which meant only two trails and two lifts. The lifts were parallel to one another so it was really only 1 lift and 1 run. It's a huge mountain in the Wasatch Mountains in upper canyon Salt Lake City. Generally it takes a day or two to find your ski legs, and while you do that you are falling down the mountain and injuring yourself and pulling muscles and twisting and contorting muscles you didn't know existed. Well I had a fun time. Friday Ian and I roamed the hotel, but like most places in Salt Lake you have to be a member to go into any restaurant or bar. Such are Mormon laws having to do with alcohol consumption. Saturday we got up and Ian finally met my fairly attractive step-sister. He liked her because shes fairly smart, fairly attractive, fairly tall, and fairly employed. But he said it would never work. Or that's what his mother told me, hes already my brother, might as well make it official. N-E-WAYZ, we ditched Samm and Zac, because they are baby beginners and we are studs. Met everyone for lunch and re hit the slopes. Afterwards I hit up the Jacuzzi, Ian said he didn't want to join, but eventually he succumbed. Like all people there is just something special about a glistening white boy 6'4" and full of muscles, that beckons them to me. Sunday was more of the same only not as long. Skied most of the morning, got some lunch and did it up again. Then we took Ian to the airport. I made tacos with cumin and everyone thought I was crazy till they tried it and they shutup and ate. Monday I had to do some more homework before our flights. Samms flight was early so I got to the airport 4 hours before my flight and I watched Entourage. That's about it, a short weekend, but heres some pictures so Im sure Escobar will enjoy.

Pretty as a picture

thanksgiving

thanksgiving

Luckily I had the entire week of Thanksgiving off, unluckily that was the week I got back from Croatia and a 9 hour time change. When I came back from Budapest I was adjusted in 1 day, but it took until the Saturday after thanksgiving for me to get readjusted. Monday I got home about 430 and went to bed until 6. I was awoken by my grandma yelling at me for sleeping, "Working men shouldn't be asleep in the afternoon." I'm no man nor do I work GRANDMA! Tuesday I got up before anyone in the house and pretty much did homework. Luckily for me the University of Amsterdam posted most of the answers for my Java course, so whenever I got stuck I could just use their work, change some variables and change the name and viola, passing grade. Tuesday a few of us went to Thirstys which is Jugs' favorite. Tino, Richard, Rene, Hash, Luis, Carla, and Guns went. Rene and I lost horribly at foosball. I also lost badly at billiards. Wednesday I again woke up before the rooster and pretty much everyone was coming home that day. Except for Cousin Paul. Cousin Paul is the smartest retardest cousin I have. He has that title because he does not know how to make, book, or catch a flight. Paul was slated to come home Wednesday to Sunday of Thanksgiving, so he booked the last Wednesday of November to come, unfortunately for him Thanksgiving was on the third weekend of November this year. According to Paul, he was taught in school that Thanksgiving was on the last week of November, generally that's true, but not always. Poor fledgling US education system. So he got home Wednesday but was leaving on Friday and was returning home via plane and train and possibly bus or subway. Poor Paul Paul. Wednesday we tried to go to ale house and to mavericks but we didn't leave until late and on Thanksgiving eve, you have to go out early. No one wanted to go to Rana's even though they were open and they have a liquor license, so we ended up going to Hash's. Thursday Zeke and Mom went to the Parade and got annihilated, luckily for us mom made thanksgiving dinner the day before. Thanksgiving was held at Cousin Marks house, drew, Helen, Cousin Paul and Cousin Mark were there. Food was excellent like always, watched the Cowboys, they won and this was the first time they had ever been 11-1. Good on them I guess. I can't remember what we did Thanksgiving evening, maybe I shouldn't write these things so far after the fact, but it very well could have been hash's apartment, a lot of things involve that guys house. Friday I played some racquetball and then I think we went to Kush or Hemingways, gosh this is really turning into the worst blog ever and there won't be any pictures so Escobar will totally hate on me. Saturday it snowed all day and it stuck all day. Usually El Paso snow melts by noon noon thirty but not this day it was hella cold. Saturday night we went to Luis' new apartment and watched a documentary called Zeitgeist which means spirit of the time, and it was about how Christianity, 9/11, and the Fed are related. Little bit out there, but definitely interesting. It's the number 1 documentary on google video, watch it if you have nothing better to do. Sunday I went home kind of early because I needed to do grocery shopping and do some more homework. Well that sort of badly wraps up Thanksgiving. I'll try to remember more of the next trip.

Still handsome after all these years,

jacob
